Let \(k\) be a perfect field of characteristic \(\ne 2\) and \(f\in k[x_1,\dots ,x_n]\) a form of degree \(d>1\). The Schmidt rank (or strength) \(r_k(f)\) of \(f\) is the minimal \(r\) such that \(f=g_1h_1+\cdots +g_rh_r\) with \(g_i, h_i\) forms over \(k\) of degree \(<d\). Increasing the field may lower the rank of \(f\). If was conjectured the existence of a real number \(k_d\) (depending on \(d\), but not the number of variables) such that \[ r_k(f) \le k_d(r_{\overline{k}}(f)) \] for all \(f\). In this short, but very interesting paper, the authors consider quartic forms, \(d=4\) and gives explicit values for the constant. They also give (for any \(d\)) relations for the Schmidt rank for Galois extensions.
