The paper deals with Hausdorff topological real vector spaces \(X\). A net \((a_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in I}\) is called {\(\rho\)-unbounded} iff a closed balanced neighborhood \(U\) of the origin exists such that for the Minkowski functional \(\rho_{U}: X\to{\mathbb R}\), \(\rho_{U}(x):=\inf\{t>0\mid x\in tU\}\) it holds that \(\lim\sup\rho_{U}(a_{\alpha})=\infty\). A subset \(A\subseteq X\) is said to be recessively compact iff for every \(\rho\)-unbounded net \((a_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in I}\) there is a subnet \((a_{\beta})_{\beta\in I'}\) and positive numbers \(t_{\beta}\) converging to \(0\) such that \((t_{\beta}a_{\beta})_{\beta\in I'}\) converges to some nonzero limit. From the author's abstract: ``We develop the concept of recessive compactness recently introduced by Luc and Penot. Then we employ this idea to extend some important results of functional analysis such as closed image criteria, a theorem on a family of unbounded sets having a finite intersection property, an existence condition for a variational inequality problem on a noncompact set, a fixed point theorem for nonexpansive maps on unbounded sets, and an existence result for periodic solutions of a nonlinear differential equation in a Hilbert space without a-priori estimates for the solutions of the equation to stay in a bounded region.''
