Cartan and Eilenberg call a functor T of several variables right balanced if T becomes an exact functor of the remaining variables when any covariant variable is replaced by an injective module or when any contravariant variable is replaced by a projective module. The authors extend this definition to the relative homological algebra situation formalized by \textit{S. Eilenberg} and \textit{J. C. Moore} [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 55 (1965; Zbl 0129.01101)]. Among the applications is the Proposition: Let R be a left coherent ring. Then the right global dimension of R with respect to the injective class F of flat right R-modules is exactly two less than the left global dimension of R with respect to the injective class A of absolutely pure left R-modules if this dimension is \(\geq 2\), or is 0 if the latter is \(\leq 1\).
