Consider the initial value problem \[ \begin{aligned} \varepsilon{dz\over dx}= F(x,y,z,\varepsilon),\quad &{dy\over dx}= f(x,y,z,\varepsilon),\quad 0<x\leq X,\\ z(0,\varepsilon)= z^0,\quad &y(0,\varepsilon)= y^0,\quad z,y\in\mathbb R.\end{aligned}\leqno{(\ast)} \] The classical Tikhonov theory is related to the case that the degenerate equation \[ F(x,y,z,0)= 0 \] has a simple roots. The author considers the case \[ F(x,y,z,\varepsilon)=- h(x,y)(z-\varphi(x,y))^2+\varepsilon F_1(x,y,z,\varepsilon) \] that is the degenerate equation has a double root. It turns out that in that case under some additional conditions the solution of the initial value problem \((\ast)\) also exhibits boundary layer behavior, but the form of the regular and of the boundary layer parts of the asymptotics, the behavior of the boundary layer functions, and the algorithm for constructing the asymptotic terms differ significantly from the case of a simple root.
