In this paper the authors consider a standard problem of optimal control consisting of maximizing a performance criterion defined on an infinite horizon. They show that the limit of \(p(T)(x(T)-x^*(T))\) exists, finite or infinite, in the set of paths such that the objective function converges. The authors then give conditions under which the condition \(\lim_{t\to \infty}p(t)=0\) implies that the limit \(\varlimsup_{t\to \infty}p(t) (x(t)-x^*(t))\geq 0\) exists and is necessarily equal to zero.
