Functions play a fundamental role in mathematics. In particular, iterative function algebras play an important role in multivalued logic and in cybernetics. In ``Characterization of Mal'tsev's preiterative algebras'' [Preprint, Univ. Montréal (1976)], \textit{I. G. Rosenberg} gives a system of axioms for preiterative function algebras, and in ``On iterative Mal'tsev-Post algebras'' (Russian) [Proc. 13th Alg. Conf., Part II, Kishinev 1985, 216 (1985)], the author described iterative function algebras with selectors abstractly. In this paper we give a characterization of iterative function algebras for the general case (with no selectors).
