The authors develop a method for automatically selecting optimal values for twist vectors or mixed partial derivatives at the grid points in the design of interpolating surfaces. To this end, they minimize an energy functional expressed as a general quadratic form in the second partial derivative of the surface. The resulting surface is bicubic (rather than biquintic). One mentions some open problems related to this approach.
