The author proposes a flux splitting \(f(u)=f^ +(u)+f^ -(u)\), with the corresponding Jacobians \(\partial f^ \pm(u)/\partial u\) having positive/negative eigenvalues. The hyperbolic essentially non-oscillatory operator is applied separately on \(f^ +(u)_ x\) and \(f^ -(u)_ x\) for the van der Waals equation. Convergence to weak solutions for various Riemann problems is observed. The solutions are then numerically checked to be admissible under the viscosity-capillarity criterion.
