The author uses the countably complete core model for one strong cardinal to show that if the Chang conjecture \((\aleph_{n+2},\aleph_{n+1})\;\Rightarrow \;(\aleph_{n+1},\aleph_n)\) holds and \(2^{\aleph_{n-1}}= \aleph_n\) (for some \(n\) with \(1<n<\omega\)), then there is an inner model with a strong cardinal. An important step in the construction makes use of the Gitik game [see \textit{M. Gitik}, Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 63, No. 3, 227-240 (1993; Zbl 0786.03037)].
