A canonical form for discrete-time systems equivalent to the Schwarz form for continuous single-input / single-output systems was shown to be useful for analysing stability by the second author [Regelungstechnik 13, 592-596 (1965; Zbl 0138.338)], for model reduction by both authors [Electronic Lett. 16, 782-783 (1980)] and for system identification by \textit{N. Dourdoumas} [Archiv für Elektrotechnik 62, 1-4 (1980)]. This form is extended in the paper for the multivariable case. A transformation matrix for transforming the Luenberger first canonical form into the new form is constructed. The method is illustrated by an example (a fifth order system with two inputs). The application to model reduction of discrete-time systems using the steady-state method is demonstrated.
