Let \(v\) be a valuation of a field \(F\) and \(\tilde v\) be a fixed prolongation of \(v\) to an algebraic closure \(\tilde F\) of \(F\). Let \(\Gamma_0\) be a linearly ordered abelian group containing the value group of \(\tilde v\) of an ordered subgroup. A pair \((\alpha,\delta)\) belonging to \(\tilde F\times\Gamma_0\) is said to be \(F\)-pre-minimal if the condition \(\tilde v(\alpha-\beta)\leq \delta\) holds for any \(\beta\in\tilde F\) such that \([F(\beta):F]< [F(\alpha):F]\). Using this notion introduced in the paper, the author describes certain properties of extensions of valuations of a field \(F\) to the rational function field \(F(x)\) in one variable. Some interesting statements are deduced when \(v\) is Henselian.
