Let \(F_q\) be a finite field, \(G=GL_n(F_q)\) the finite general linear group, \(M=M_n(F_q)\) the monoid of all \(n\times n\) matrices over \(F_q\), \(B\) the Borel subgroup of \(G\) of upper triangular matrices, \(W\) the subgroup of \(G\) of permutation matrices, and \(R\) the monoid of all zero-one matrices which have at most one nonzero entry in each row and each column. Using combinatorial arguments the author introduces a length function on \(R\) which extends the length function on \(W\). He also investigates a \(\mathbb{C}\)-algebra \(H(M,B)\) which includes the Hecke algebra \(H(G,B)\).
