Confirming a conjecture of \textit{G. Hjorth} and \textit{A. S. Kechris} [Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 82, 221-272 (1996; Zbl 0933.03056)], the authors prove that the isomorphism relation for fields of finite transcendence degree is a universal essentially countable Borel equivalence relation. They also prove that the theory of fields of finite transcendence degree does not admit canonical models.
