Let \(f(x_ 1,\dots,x_ d)\) be a \(2\pi\)-periodic (with respect to each variable) function belonging to the space \(L_ 2(\pi_ d)\), where \(\pi_ d=\prod^ d_{j=1}[-\pi,\pi]\). The author states a direct theorem on the approximation of a function \(f\in L_ 2(\pi_ d)\) by trigonometric polynomials, each with its spectrum in some hyperbolic cross. As the \(L_ 2\)-modulus of continuity, he employs an analogue of a quantity considered by \textit{V. N. Temlyakov} [Ukrain. Mat. Zh. 41, No. 4, 518-524 (1989; Zbl 0714.42002)] in the case of the space \(C(\pi_ d)\). The relation between this modulus of continuity and a Peetre \(K\)- functional is established.
