The reduction procedure first introduced by \textit{J. Marsden} and \textit{A. Weinstein} [Rep. Math. Phys. 5, 121-130 (1974; Zbl 0327.58005)] has been studied for Kähler and hyper-Kähler manifolds [\textit{N. J. Hitchin}, \textit{A. Karlhede}, \textit{U. Lindström} and \textit{M. Roček}, Commun. Math. Phys. 108, 535-589 (1987)] where it leads to quotients of the same type. In the present paper, the procedure is extended to quaternionic Kähler manifolds (which are not Kähler manifolds!). Then this new procedure is applied to quaternionic projective spaces, and it produces various quaternionic Kähler manifolds and orbifolds including an orbifold with non-symmetric metric at all regular points. Possible applications to supersymmetry of field theories are indicated.
