This book is devoted to the detailed exposition of a remarkable example due to B. S. Tsirelson (1974) of a Banach space T without any isomorphic copies of \(\ell_ p\) \((1\leq p<\infty)\) or \(c_ 0\). The book consists of the following parts. Chapter 0. Precursors of the Tsirelson construction (Schreier space S, Baernstein space B and some its variants \(B_ p).\) Chapter 1. The Figiel-Johnson construction of Tsirelson's space (This construction gives an analytic description of the norm on T, and it permits to develop certain new properties of T). Chapter 2. Block basic sequences in Tsirelson's space (One examines the rather special behavior of block basic sequences in T). Chapter 3. Bounded linear operators on T and the ``blocking'' principle (Any isometry U of T must have the following form: \(Ut_ n=\pm t_ n\) for all \(n\geq 1\), or \(Ut_ 1=\pm t_ 2\) \(Ut_ 2=\pm t_ 1\), \(Ut_ n=\pm t_ n\) for all \(n\geq 3\), where \((t_ n)\) is the canonical basis for T). Chapter 4. Subsequences of the canonical basis of t (Classification of the subsequences of \((t_ n)\) which are equivalent or not equivalent to \((t_ n)).\) Chapter 5. Modified Tsirelson's space (Johnson's construction which gives a space \(T_ M\) naturally isomorphic to T. This construction allows to establish some new properties of T). Chapter 6. Embedding theorems about T and \(T^*\) (An infinite dimensional Banach space is said to be minimal if it embeds (isomorphically) into each of its infinite dimensional subspaces. T is not minimal, but \(T^*\) is minimal). Chapter 7. Isomorphisms between subspaces of T which are spanned by subsequences of \((t_ n)\) (Two subsequences span isomorphic subspaces of T if and only if the subsequences are equivalent). Chapter 8. Permutations of the canonical basis of T (One of the results: two subsequences of \((t_ n)\) are permutatively equivalent iff they are equivalent). Chapter 9. Unconditional bases for complemented subspaces of T (Every normalized unconditional basis for T has a subsequence which is permutatively equivalent to \((t_ n)).\) Chapter 10. Variations of a theme (One gives some variants of constructions of ``Tsirelson-like'' spaces, including a continuum of totally incomparable spaces \(T_{\theta}\) \((0<\theta <1)\), a symmetric version of T, a ``treed'' version, p-convexification of T, and the Tirilman space. Other variations are mentioned in Chapter 11). Chapter 11. Some final comments (``James-Tsirelson'' space, spaces of holomorphic functions H(T) and \(H(T^*)\), tensor products of Tsirelson's space, Tsirelson-like function space and others). Appendix 1. Weak Hilbert spaces (Weak type and weak cotype, weak Hilbert spaces, connection with convexified Tsirelson's spaces). Appendix 2. (by J. W. Baker, O. A. Slotterbeck, R. Aron) An Algorithm for computing the Tsirelson's space norm.
