Given an indefinite quaternion algebra \(B\) over \(\mathbb{Q}\), and an Eichler order \(O\) of \(B\), we have a Shimura curve \(\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}\), where \(\mathbb{H}\) is the upper half plane and \(\Gamma\) is the group of norm \(1\) units of \(O\). Closed geodesics of \(\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}\) correspond to optimal embeddings of real quadratic orders into \(O\) (an embedding is called \emph{optimal} if it does not extend to an embedding of any larger order into \(O\)). Given a pair of quadratic orders this paper obtains a formula for the total intersection number over all optimal embeddings of the two orders into \(O\). Several examples are explicitly calculated. This work is a real quadratic analog of \textit{B. H. Gross} and \textit{D. B. Zagier} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 355, 191--220 (1985; Zbl 0545.10015)], and is related to the work of \textit{H. Darmon} and \textit{J. Vonk} [Duke Math. J. 170, No. 1, 23--93 (2021; Zbl 1486.11137)].
