A \((2v\times 2v)\)-matrix with entries from \(\{-1, 1\}\) is called a \(D\)-optimal design of order \(2v\) if it has maximum determinant in the class of all matrices of this type. The authors study the Smith normal form (SNF) of designs in order to have sufficient conditions that two designs are not permutation-equivalent. They determine the SNF of \(D\)-optimal designs of order \(4t+2\), where \(4t+1\) is square-free, and they derive a lower bound for the number of 2's which can appear in the SNF. Moreover, by computer search the SNFs of \(D\)-optimal designs of size \(<100\) are determined.
