The author studies the decomposition of continuously differentiable vector fields on \({\mathbb R}^n\). He gives a geometric generalization of Presnov's decomposition of continuously differentiable vector fields as a sum of a gradient vector field and a vector field orthogonal to the Euler vector field \[ V = \sum_{j=1}^n x_j \frac{\partial}{\partial x_j}. \] The Euclidean, symplectic and Minkowski geometric structure are investigated. As examples, the Lotka-Volterra model and the Rikitake-two-disc dynamo are discussed.
