The authors study the stabilization of solutions of a nonlinear axially moving beam by a control input at the right boundary: \[ \begin{cases}y_{tt}+2vy_{xt}+v^2y_{xx}+y_{xxxx}+f(y)=0, \quad x\in(0,1), \ t>0,\\ y(0,t)=y_x(0,t)=y_{xx}(1,t)=0,\quad t\geq0,\\ -y_{xx}(1,t)=u(t), \quad t\geq0,\\ y(x,0)=y_0(x),y_t(x,0)=y_1(x), \quad x\in(0,1),\\ w(t)=\left(y_t+vy_x\right)\left(1,t\right), \quad t>0, \end{cases} \] where \(y(x,t)\) is the transverse displacement of the beam which is axially moving with a constant velocity \(\upsilon\) such that \(0<v<1,\) \(y_{0}\) and \(y_{1}\) are the initial displacement and the initial velocity respectively, \(u(t)\) is the boundary control force applied at the free end of the beam, \(w(t)\) is the measured signal of the system at that free end and at instant \(t\), and \(f\) is an internal nonlinear source which is due to internal perturbation of the dynamics of the beam. The existence and uniqueness of solution of the related closed loop system are discussed. It is shown that under the designed adaptive control, the closed loop system is exponentially stable.
