Considered is the Cauchy problem for the strongly damped wave equation in \(\mathbb{R}^N\), \(N=3,4,5\), \(u_{tt}(t,x)-\Delta u_t(t,x) -\Delta u(t,x)=0\) for \((t,x)\in(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N\), \(u(0,\cdot)=u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\), \(u_t(0,\cdot)=u_1\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)\). One of the purpose of the paper is to investigate the asymptotic expansion of the squared \(L^2\)-norm of the weak solution \(u(t,x)\) as \(t\to\infty\). The second purpose is to investigate the asymptotic expansion of the squared \(L^2\)-norm, as \(t\to\infty\), of the difference between the Fourier transform of the solution, \(\hat{u}(t,x)\), and its profile \(\nu(t,\xi)\) in the Fourier space. Inspired by the methods developed in the papers of Ikehata and the second author one determines the suitable necessary additional assumptions on initial data. To obtain the asymptotic expansions of the desired norms, one uses Taylor expansions of \(\hat{u}(t,\xi)\) about \(\xi=0\). For \(N\geq 3\), an asymptotic expansion for the squared \(L^2\)-norm of the solution \(u(t,.)\) and for its Fourier transform \(\hat{u}(t,.)\), as \(t\to\infty\) , with the coefficients depending on the space dimension \(N\) and initial data, is proved. For the second result one considers the weak solution for the stated problem and the asymptotic profile \(\nu(t,\xi)\) of the Fourier transform \(\hat{u}(t,\cdot)\) as defined by Ikehata. For \(N\geq 3\), an asymptotic expansion for the squared \(L^2\)-norm of the difference \(\hat{u}(t,\cdot)-\nu(t,\cdot)\), as \(t\to\infty\), with the coefficients depending on \(N\) and initial data, is proved. An asymptotic expansion for the squared \(L^2\)-norm of the Ikehata asymptotic profile is also obtained. The cited main articles in the present paper are: [\textit{R. Ikehata}, J. Differ.
