A controlled hyperbolic equation in the domain \([0,1]\times[0,1]\) with known boundary conditions on \(z(0,y)\) and \(z(x,0)\) is considered; \(z(x,y)\) denotes the solution of the equation. One formulates an optimal control problem with an integral performance functional depending on the first and second order derivatives of \(z(0,t)\) and \(z(t,0)\). The authors indicate a list of basic assumptions under which the stated problem should have at least one solution and prove it. To fully understand the proofs, the reader will also have to have a look at some references cited by the authors, for instance the papers from 1994 and 2000 of Idczak and Walczak. The last one is: [\textit{D. Idczak} and \textit{S. Walczak}, Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 23, No. 5, 297--311 (2000; Zbl 0959.49004)].
