Let \(S\) be a semigroup and let \(l^1 (S)\) be its Banach semigroup algebra. The amenability and the weak amenability of \(l^1 (S)\) have been widely investigated. When \(S\) is a group, it is known that \(l^1 (S)\) is amenable if and only if \(S\) is an amenable group and \(l^1 (S)\) is weakly amenable for all groups. The bicyclic semigroup \(S_1\) is an amenable inverse semigroup. In this note it is shown that \(l^1 (S_1)\) is not approximately amenable.
