The paper addresses a nonintegrable generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation in the form of coupled equations for the velocity and surface elevation (in terms of effective wave equations for shallow water). By means of the method of characteristics and Lyapunov's functions, scenarios for the appearance of the blow-up phenomenon are outlined. Exact blow-up rates are identified. Sufficient conditions for the existence of global solutions are established, too.
