The aim of this paper is to study the two-component Camassa-Holm (2CH) system, \[ \begin{aligned} u_t-u_{txx}+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}+\rho\rho_x&= 0,\\ \rho_t+(u\rho)_x&= 0.\end{aligned} \] It has been derived as a model for shallow water by \textit{A. Constantin} and \textit{R. I. Ivanov} [Phys. Lett., A 372, No. 48, 7129--7132 (2008; Zbl 1227.76016)] and has been studied intensively over the last few years by several authors. Following conservative solutions of this system along characteristics, the author determines if wave breaking occurs in the nearby future or not, for initial data \(u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R})\) and \(\rho_0\in L^2(\mathbb{R})\).
