\textit{I. M. Gel'fand} and \textit{V. A. Ponomarev} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 197, 762--765 (1971; Zbl 0294.15001); Colloq. Math. Soc. János Bolyai 5, 163--237 (1972; Zbl 0294.15002)] gave the classification of systems of quadruples of subspaces in a finite dimensional vector space. In the present paper the authors consider two pairs of supplementary spaces and study the lattice generated by sum and intersection to finally obtain the description of representations admitting two pairs of supplementary invariant spaces or one pair of spaces and a reflexive form. The results are applied firstly to lattices of stable spaces of finite dimensional representations and then to `holonomy representations' related to the torsion free connections. Since any holonomy algebra can be viewed as a Berger algebra the authors focus on representations of the latter one.
