For any space \(X\) let \(\text{H}(X)\) be the group of autohomeomorphisms of \(X\). Consider the set \(L_+=[0,1)\times\omega_1\) with the lexicographic order topology and let \(L_-\) be the same set with its topology induced by the reversed order. Then \(u=(0,0)\) is the smallest element of \(L_+\); denote by \(u'\) the largest element of \(L_-\). The long line \(L\) is the space \(L_+\oplus L_-\) in which the points \(u\) and \(u'\) are identified. Let \(D\) be the set \(\{0,1\}\) with the natural group operations. The symmetric group \(S_n\) acts on \(D^n\) by permuting the coordinates. Let \(G_n\) be the respective semi-direct product of \(D\) and \(S_n\). The authors prove, among other things, that if \(T\) is a subgroup of the group \(\text{H}(L^n)\) (or \(\text{H}(L_+^n)\)) and every \(t\in T\) has a finite order then \(T\) is isomorphic to a subgroup of \(G_n\) (to a subgroup of \(S_n\) respectively).
