This is a continuation of an earlier paper by the author [Commun. Math. Phys. 231, No. 1, 45--95 (2002; Zbl 1024.58013)], in which a Chern character for families of spectral triples \((E,\rho, D)\) was constructed. (Here we are given two bornological algebras \(A\) and \(B\), \(E\) is a right \(B\)-module and left \(A\)-module, and \(D\) is a Dirac operator on \(E\), i.e. a densely defined endomorphism of \(E\); there are also some technical assumptions on these objects, in particular some boundednes condition on the heat kernel of the Laplacian related to \(D\); this is a generalization of the Connes spectral triple analogous to the generalization of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem to families of elliptic operators indexed by a space). In order to present the main results of the paper let us recall briefly the construction of the Chern character of the previous paper. First, to any spectral triple \((E, p, D)\) the author assigns a cocycle \(\chi(E,\rho, D)\in\text{Hom}(\Omega_\varepsilon A,X(B))\); here \(\Omega_\varepsilon A\) is the complex of entire chains on \(A\), i.e. the completion of the algebra of noncommutative differential forms on \(A\) with respect to certain bom ology, and \(X(A)\) is the Quillen \(X\)-complex of \(A\). Next, \((E,\rho,D)\) is extended to a \(TA\)-\(TB\)-bimodule (where \(TA\) is the analytic tensor algebra of \(A\) i.e. the algebra of even forms over \(A\) with Fedosov product), and then the construction of the previous step gives a cocycle \(\in\text{Hom}(\Omega_\varepsilon TA,X(TB))\). Finally, using homotopy equivalence \(\Omega_\varepsilon TA\approx X(TA))\), we get the required Chern character as an element of the bivariant entire cyclic cohomology of \(A\) and \(B\), \(HE_*(A, B)= H_*(X(TA),XT(B))\). Thus the Chern character is in general represented by an infinite-dimensional cocycle. The main result of the paper is that, under certain finite summability condition imposed on the spectral triple \((E,\rho,D)\), the entire Chern character retracts on finite-dimensional cocycles. More precisely, the author shows that corresponding to the cocycle \((E,\rho,D)\in\text{Hom}(\Omega_\varepsilon A,X(B))\) there are some finite-dimensional periodic cocycles representing the same cohomology class in the complex of periodic cochains and cohomologous to \(\chi(E,\rho,D)\). This enables the author to give explicit formulas for the cycles representing Chern character for bounded Kasparov bimodules, as well as to give a purely algebraic construction of periodic Chern character on KK-groups and establish compatibility of the Chern character with the Kasparov product.
