An equivariant compactification of the complex vector space \(G={\mathbb C}^n\) is a projective variety \(X\) of dimension \(n\), endowed with an action of \(G\) such that there exists a Zariski open orbit (which is isomorphic to \(G\)). Two such structures on \(X\) are isomorphic if there exists a linear map on \(G\) and an automorphism of \(X\) which transform one action into the other. It has been shown by \textit{B. Hassett} and \textit{Y. Tschinkel} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 1999, No. 22, 1211--1230 (1999; Zbl 0966.14033)] that if \(n\geq 2\), then \({\mathbb P}^n\) has several non-isomorphic equivariant compactification structures. In fact, if \(n\geq 6\), there are infinitely many such structures. In this article, it is shown that this phenomenon is very special to the projective space. In fact, let \(X\subset {\mathbb P}^N\) be a submanifold with Picard number 1 such that for a general point \(x\in X\), there exists a line of the ambient projective space passing through \(x\) which is contained in \(X\). Then if \(X\) is not isomorphic to the projective space, then all equivariant compactification structures on \(X\) are isomorphic.
