Given a quasi-normed function space $X$ over a finite measure $\mu$ and a Young function $\Phi$, the authors introduce the Orlicz space $$ X^\Phi=\left\{f\in L^0(\mu): \, \Phi\left(\frac{|f|}{\lambda}\right) \in X \text{ for some }\lambda>0\right\}, $$ which is a quasi-normed function space over $\mu$ when equipped with the quasi-norm $$ \|f\|_{X^\Phi}=\inf\left\{\lambda>0: \, \Phi\left(\frac{|f|}{\lambda}\right) \in B_X\right\}, $$ where $B_X$ stands for the closed unit ball of $X$. Several properties of the space $X^\Phi$ are discussed. It is proved that $X^\Phi$ is complete (resp., has the $\sigma$-Fatou property) whenever $X$ is complete (resp., has the $\sigma$-Fatou property). Under the additional assumption that $\Phi$ has the $\Delta_2$-property, it is shown that $X^\Phi$ is $\sigma$-order continuous whenever $X$ is. The construction applies naturally when $X$ is the space $L^1(m)$ (resp., $L^1_w(m)$) of real-valued functions which are integrable (resp., weakly integrable) with respect to a Banach space-valued measure $m$, or when $X$ is the space $L^1(\|m\|)$ of real-valued functions which are integrable with respect to the semivariation of $m$. Along this way, it is proved that $L^1_w(m)^\Phi$ (resp., $L^1(m)^\Phi$ when $\Phi$ has the $\Delta_2$-property) coincides with the Orlicz space $L^\Phi_w(m)$ (resp., $L^\Phi(m)$) studied in [\textit{O. Delgado}, Indag. Math., New Ser. 15, No. 4, 485--495 (2004; Zbl 1087.46023)]. Some applications to interpolation are also given. For further results related to the topic of the paper, see [\textit{R. del Campo} et al., Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fís. Nat., Ser. A Mat., RACSAM 114, No. 3, Paper No. 112, 17 p.
