    The quaternionic theory of surfaces in four dimensional Euclidean space has been developed by \textit{F. E. Burstall, D. Ferus, K. Leschke, F. Pedit} and \textit{U. Pinkall} in amongst others [Conformal geometry of surfaces in \(S^4\) and quaternions, Lecture Notes in Mathematics 1772, Springer Verlag, Berlin (2002; Zbl 1033.53001)]. In the present paper, the author uses this technique in order to study Lagrangian branched immersions from a Riemann surface to a complex Euclidean plane. First he shows that the quotient of two linearly independent quaternionic holomorphic sections defines a conformal branched immersion from a Riemann surface in the quaternions. Next a classification is obtained what the denominator should look like in order for the immersion to be Lagrangian (both for open and closed Riemann surfaces). Finally all of the above is applied to questions related to Hamiltonian minimal Lagrangian immersions.
