Similarly to a Bézier-type modification of Bernstein polynomials introduced in 1983 by G. Chang, the author introduces the Szász-Bézier operator as a modification of the classical Szász-Mirakyan operator. The rate of convergence of the Szász-Bézier operator in the class of functions of bounded variation is then studied. The author proves that his estimates are, in a certain sense, optimal.
