The second-order differential equation \[ t^2x+ f(x)= 0\tag{E} \] is considered. Here, \(f(x)\) is continuous and \(xf(x)> 0\) if \(x\neq 0\). The oscillation and nonoscillation of solutions to (E) is discussed when \(f(x)\) is assumed to be asymptotically linear. The results are applicable to the critical case \(f(x)/x\to 1/4\) as \(x\to\infty\). As a conclusion of the more general theorems there is proved that for \(f(x)= x/4+ \lambda x/(\log x)^2\) equation (E) is oscillatory if \(\lambda> 1/4\) and nonoscillatory if \(\lambda\leq 1/16\). The review of previous results of this kind is given, too.
