    Here, the first-order delay differential equation \[ x'(t)+ p(t)x(\tau(t))= 0,\quad t\geq t_0,\quad \tau(t)< t, \] is considered. New oscillation criteria are obtained in the case where \[ \int^t_{\tau(t)} p(s) ds\geq {1\over e}\quad\text{and}\quad \lim_{t\to\infty} \int^t_{\tau(t)} p(s) ds= {1\over e}. \] In particular, an open problem by \textit{Á. Elbert} and \textit{I. P. Stavroulakis} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 123, No. 5, 1503-1510 (1995; Zbl 0828.34057)] is solved.
