For a commutative field \(K\), the formal Puiseux series field with coefficients in \(K\) is \(K((\hat X)) =\bigcup_{n=1}^{\infty}K((X^{{1\over n}}))\). In this paper, the authors study algebraic Puiseux series which are roots of polynomials of the type \(P(X,Y)\in K[X][Y]\). In this situation, it is sufficient to consider power series without fractional exponents. These are in fact algebraic power series. The authors show that the algebraicity of a series, for given bounded degrees, is determined by a finite number of explicit universal polynomial formulas. The converse is also studied.
