An analogue of the classical Bernstein theorem is proved. This theorem concerns the rate of polynomial approximation of piecewise analytic functions on a compact subset of the real line. A general set in the complex plane is considered also. The notions of potential theory in the plane are used. Three lemmas and one theorem are proved.
