Let \(E\) be a Hilbert space and let \(f \in C^2(E,\mathbb{R})\) satisfy the Palais-Smale condition with \(f'\) of the \(Id+\) compact. Suppose the mountain pass theorem, the linking theorem and a critical point theorem of \textit{E. Feireisl} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 12, 279-290 (1988; Zbl 0657.35089)] applies. The author gives conditions on \(f\) so that these three abstract critical point theorems yield three distinct solutions. The result is applied to a semilinear elliptic Dirichlet problem with jumping nonlinearity.
