The authors study transversality properties of sections of elliptic surfaces and obtain consequences for elliptic divisibility sequences and the geography of surfaces. In particular they construct surfaces, with only mild singularities, of arbitrary fixed geometric genus with canonical class \(K\) ample and \(K^2\) unbounded.
