The paper under review is a nice survey article on recent results by the authors on infinitesimal automorphisms of polynomial finite-type model surfaces in 3-dimensional space. This is the lowest dimension in which the Catlin multitype controls the behaviour of the symmetries and new exotic symmetries appear. The authors review algebraic constructions of so-called Y-chains of polynomials that give rise to model hypersurfaces with the exotic symmetry Y. Theorem 3.5 establishes the structure of the polynomial defining equation of a model with exotic symmetry Y in terms of pairs of Y-chains. The existence of chains of arbitrary length can be reduced to the so-called PQ problem about Y-chains of length 2. The authors also provide several instructive examples.
