Let \(p\) be a rational prime and \(G_2(p)\) the exceptional group of type \(G_2\) over the finite field \({\mathbb F}_p.\) For a set of primes of density one the authors realize \(G_2(p)\) as a Galois group over \({\mathbb Q}\) of some field extension which is ramified only at \(5\) and \(p.\) This result is obtained by construction of the compatible system of \(p\)-adic representation of \({\mathrm{Gal}}({\bar{\mathbb Q}}/{\mathbb Q})\) attached to a regular, self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representation of \(\mathrm{GL}_7({\mathbb A})\) and then reduction modulo \(p.\) \({\mathbb A}\) denotes here the adele ring over \({\mathbb Q}.\) In the process the authors prove directly a special version of a theorem of \textit{M. Larsen} [Duke Math. J. 80, No. 3, 601--630 (1995; Zbl 0912.11026)].
