An analogue of the classical Frobenius-Schur duality between representations of general linear groups and symmetric groups is established as a duality between representations of Hecke algebras of \(GL ({\mathfrak l})\) and representations of quantum algebras of \(sl_n\). If \(\widehat H_{\mathfrak l} (q^2)\) denotes the affine Hecke algebra and \(U_q (\widehat {sl}_{n+1})\) the quantum affine algebra, then a functor is constructed from the category of finite dimensional \(\widehat H_{\mathfrak l} (q^2)\)-modules to the category of finite dimensional \(U_q (\widehat {sl}_{n+1})\)-modules \(W\) of ``type 1''. The ``type 1'' is characterized by a mild spectral condition. Under the assumption that \(q\) is not a root of unity, it is proved, that every irreducible \(U_q(sl_{n+1})\)-type which occurs in \(W\) also occurs in \(V^{\otimes {\mathfrak l}}\), the \({\mathfrak l}\)-fold tensor product of the natural \(n+1\)-dimensional irreducible representation \(V\) of \(U_q (sl_{n+1})\). This functor is an equivalence if \({\mathfrak l} \leq n\).
