    Let \((R,\mathfrak{m})\) be a commutative Noetherian local ring with identity and \(\mathfrak{a}\) be an ideal of \(R\). Let \(M\) be a nonzero finitely generated \(R\)-module of dimension \(d\). The paper under review concerns the formal local cohomology modules \[ \mathfrak{F}_{\mathfrak{a}}^i(M):=\underset{n}{\varprojlim}H_{\mathfrak{m}}^i(M/\mathfrak{a}^n M); \ \ i\in \mathbb{N}_0. \] These modules were first introduced and studied by \textit{C. Peskine} and \textit{L. Szpiro} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 42, 47--119 (1972; Zbl 0268.13008)]. \textit{P. Schenzel} [J. Algebra 315, No. 2, 894--923 (2007; Zbl 1131.13018)] has shown that \[ \sup\{i\in \mathbb{N}_0 \ |\ \mathfrak{F}_{\mathfrak{a}}^i(M)\neq 0\}=\dim_R M/\mathfrak{a} M. \] Assume that \(\dim_R M/\mathfrak{a} M=d\) and \(N\) denotes the largest submodule of \(M\) such that \(\dim_RN/\mathfrak{a} N<\dim_R M/\mathfrak{a} M\). As the main result of this paper, the author proves that \(\text{Ann}_R(\mathfrak{F}_{\mathfrak{a}}^d(M))=\text{Ann}_R(M/N)\).
