Recently, it was proved that the classical van der Corput sequence is the worst distributed sequence (with respect to various distribution measures including \(D^*\)) among all \((0,1)\)-sequences [in the sense of \textit{H. Niederreiter}, Random number generation and quasi-Monte Carlo methods. CBMS-NSF Regional Conference Series in Applied Mathematics. 63. Philadelphia, PA: SIAM, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (1992; Zbl 0761.65002)]. In the present paper it is shown that this is not the case for the extreme discrepancy \(D\) by constructing two kinds of sequences which are the worst distributed among all \((0,1)\)-sequences, with a discrepancy \(D\) essentially twice greater. Furthermore, a unified description of van der Corput like sequences is presented.
