The authors study the Wecken property for coincidences of boundary preserving mappings between surfaces with nonempty boundary. Recall that the Wecken property means that the minimal number of coincidence points is realized in the appropriate homotopy class i.e. there are representatives \((f',g')\) in the homotopy class of \((f,g)\) which have exactly \(N_{rel}(f,g)\) coincidence points, where \(N_{rel}(f,g)\) is a relative Nielsen number. Special situations where the domain surface is either the disc, the annulus or the Möbius band are studied. The Wecken property is proved then for many target surfaces. E.g. for the disc it holds for all target surfaces, and for the other examples it is true for all target surfaces with nonpositive Euler characteristic.
