Let \((M^n,g)\) be a closed \(n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold, \(\omega\in\mathbb R\) be arbitrary and \(q,m_0\) be positive real numbers. The author proves existence of sequences of smooth positive solutions to the critical Schrödinger-Poisson system \[ \begin{cases} \Delta_gu+\omega^2u+\varphi u=u^{2^*-1},\\ \Delta_g\varphi+m^2_0\varphi=4\pi q^2u^2 \end{cases} \] which are not bounded in \(H^1\) when \(n=4\) or \(n=5\). The results are in striking contrast with the lower dimensional case \(n=3\) and the higher dimensional cases \(n\geq 6\), when no such sequences of solutions exist as it follows from [\textit{E. Hebey} and \textit{J. Wei}, ibid. 47, No. 1--2, 25--54 (2013; Zbl 1267.58019)] and [\textit{W. Pauli}, Rev. Mod. Phys. 13, 203--232 (1941; Zbl 0028.38003)].
