The spherical functions \(\phi_\lambda\) for the symmetric spaces of noncompact type \(G/K\) are associated to the root system of the Lie algebra \(g\) of \(G\), and are parametrized by the multiplicities of the roots. The author has obtained a generalized version of the spherical functions by replacing the multiplicities by a Weyl-invariant multiplicity function of the roots. In the case of the spherical functions there exists an estimate of \(\phi_\lambda \) in the spectral parameter \(\lambda\), obtained by Duistermaat, Kolk and Varadarajan. In the paper under review, the author extends this estimate to the generalized spherical functions, for the root systems of type A.
