An initial value problem for the damped wave equation in \(\mathbb R^d\) with a variable damping term \(a(x)\) and variable coefficients \(g_{ij}(x)\) is considered. One starts with the investigation on the asymptotic behavior of the solutions for an initial value problem for the damped wave equation with two self-adjoint operators \(A\) and \(B\) as coefficients and damping. One denotes it abstract wave equation. Under some special assumptions resolvent estimates are shown. Results on abstract energy decay and abstract diffusion phenomena connected to this problem are largely discussed. Finally, all these results are applied to the stated problem. As an application of the abstract energy decay and under the additional assumption, that a certain geometric control condition is satisfied, estimations showing the asymptotic profile of the solution are proved.
