The paper under review deals with the convergence of Riemannian manifolds. Namely, the authors consider the intrinsic flat convergence and analyze how this kind of convergence of Riemannian manifolds affects the behavior of Riemannian covering spaces and covering spectra, see [\textit{C. Sormani} and \textit{G. Wei}, J. Differ. Geom. 67, No. 1, 35--77 (2004; Zbl 1106.58025)], [\textit{C. Sormani} and \textit{S. Wenger}, J. Differ. Geom. 87, No. 1, 117--199 (2011; Zbl 1229.53053)]. Generically, given a sequence of Riemannian manifolds converging in the intrinsic flat sense, their covering spaces and covering spectra need not converge. However, imposing quite natural restrictions and applying \(\delta\)-covers (see [\textit{C. Sormani} and \textit{G. Wei}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No. 9, 3585--3602 (2001; Zbl 1005.53035)]), the authors prove the following theorem of convergence. Theorem. Let \(M_j\) be a sequence of oriented Riemannian manifolds of constant dimension and bounded volume and diameter: \(\mathrm{Vol}(M_j) \leq V_0\), \(\mathrm{Diam}(M_j)\leq D_0\), \(\dim(M_j)=m\). Suppose that \(M_j\) converge in the intrinsic flat sense to a connected metric space \(M_\infty\not= 0\). Suppose in addition that \(\delta\)-covers \(\pi_j: \tilde M^\delta_j\to M_j\) are finite covers of order \(N\). Then a subsequence of \(\tilde M^\delta_j\) converges in the intrinsic flat sense to \(M^\delta_\infty\) which is a metric space with \(N_1\) components \(\dot{M}^\delta_\infty\) each of which is a covering space of order \(N_2\) over \(M_\infty\), where \(N_1\cdot N_2 = N\). Besides, the authors construct numerous examples which illustrate geometric features of the intrinsic flat convergence concerning covering spaces and covering spectra. | |||
