The authors study the behaviour of the first positive eigenvalue \(\lambda_1^{\mathcal{L}_{r,s}}\) of the Jacobi operator \(\mathcal{L}_{r,s} :C^{\infty}(M) \rightarrow C^{\infty}(M)\), \(\mathcal{L}_{r,s}(f)=\sum_{j=r}^s(j+1)a_jL_j(f)\), where \(L_j\) are the linearized operators of the \(j\)th mean curvatures \(H_j , a_j\) are nonnegative real numbers (at least one nonzero) and \(f\) is a smooth function defined on a closed hypersurface \(M^n\) immersed either in spherical or in hyperbolic spaces. They obtain optimal upper estimates for \(\lambda_1^{\mathcal{L}_{r,s}}\) (Theorems 1--3) extending previous results obtained by \textit{H. Alencar} et al. [Ill. J. Math. 45, No. 3, 851--863 (2001; Zbl 0990.53058)] and \textit{J.-F. Grosjean} [Hokkaido Math. J. 33, No. 2, 319--339 (2004; Zbl 1085.58024)].
