The author considers the two-dimensional sphere equipped with a particular family of smooth Riemannian metrics, which are called almost Liouville. The metrics are perturbations of the standard metric, and they share the property that all geodesics are closed and of length \(2\pi\). Let \(-\Delta\) denote the Laplace-Beltrami operator of a given metric from the family. The eigenvalues \(\lambda_{ki}\) of the Schrödinger operator \(-\Delta+q\) with real-valued potential \(q\) are known to asymptotically satisfy the clustering \(|\lambda_{ki}-k(k+1)|=O(1)\), \(i=0,\dots,2k\). Let \(c_0\) denote the average of \(q\) over the manifold. The main result is a trace formula which states that the sum \(\sum_k \sum_i \big(\lambda_{ki}-k(k+1) -c_0\big)\) equals an expression which consists of integrals over the manifold and over the cosphere bundle. The integrands are given by explicit formulas which contain geometric quantities and the potential \(q\). The computations involve Dirichlet series and evaluations of the \(\zeta\)-function of the operator.
